What strip widths do we cater for? How is a core tested? What dimensions do we manufacture? What are the design considerations?

Stock Strip Widths

AEM Cores has a slitting line and carries slit strip from 10mm wide in increments of 5mm to 70mm. Thereafter we slit in 10mm increments to 150mm. Our steel is supplied in 50,70,152 and 210mm wide coil. We would encourage our customers to settle on designs based around these common sizes or multiples thereof. Special orders requiring a set up and slit run can be accommodated as production volumes dictate. Our maximum strip width is 210mm.

We reserve the right to use multiple strip widths to build up a stack for larger sizes if required.

Dimension Tolerances

All dimensions will be rounded to the nearest millimeter, we do not accept fractional dimensions.

ID -0.8 mm + 0 mm
OD -0 mm + 0.8 mm
SW  -0 mm + 0.8 mm

Dimension Limits
ID > 20 mm
OD < 600 mm
BUP > 5 mm
10 < SW < 210 mm

Test Regime

After annealing each core is inspected and degaussed to above 1.8T, it is then tested and the unique core number noted on the label. Each core is assigned a unique number against which all test data and dimensional information is stored. This number should be quoted in any correspondence concerning the performance of a core.

Refer to the sheet Performance Data - GOSS for the graph of the Total Magnetising Field resolved into Loss and Reactive components, plus the Power Curves resolved into Specific Total and Quadrature Excitation components

Design Considerations

  • The action of slitting steel tends to cause micro cracks in the insulated coating at either edge. This is particularly noticeable in thin strip widths less than 20mm and can reduce the magnetic performance of the core.
  • ID vs OD ratio. If the ID < 0.7 x OD we notice a concentration of flux on the inner radius of the core, with the outer only partially fluxed.
  • c) Very small Build Up cores are not encouraged, it is difficult to handle and anneal a core with a BUP less than 5mm.
